'Hoppers take up the #RiceBucketChallenge!

What is it?

In response to the social media overreaction to the ALS #IceBucketChalleneg (“What is ALS? Why are we wasting cold water?! I use a bucket everyday!”), a very smart lady from Hyderabad came up with the innovative RiceBucketChallenge.

It’s simple :

1) Pick up a bowl of rice from your kitchen

2) Go to the nearest needy person and give it to them

3) Click a picture and post it on Facebook with the hashtag #RiceBucketChallenge

4) Tag all your friends and ask them to take up the challenge

Why is it so amazing?

This viral campaign responds to a pressing local need in a meaningful way. Much more meaningful than dumping ice water on yourself (See ALS #IceBucketChallenge). Poverty and food insecurity is a huge issue in India, the World Bank estimates that nearly 316 million people live below the poverty line in our country.

So, why not save the ice and donate some rice?

Now, this is something the ‘Hoppers can get behind.

As the resident rice loving Golti, (I am a Reddy, rice is our life blood) I am all for donating rice. Rice is amazing. Much of my identity and daily nutritional intake is based on rice. Rice rice rice. Hmmm.

The Social Media team took up the #RiceBucketChallenge. In return, we now challenge Greenthumb, the PR wing of Grasshoppers to take up the challenge. Your move, Greenthumb, DONATE SOME RICE! (and don’t forget to send us the photos to upload after, thanks!)
